Description

PBwiki claims to be the largest provider of wikis for business and education in the world and they may be right.  PBwiki will host your wiki for you and provides a number of features.  With a PBwiki, you get a an easy to use interface for editing your content.  You can customize your sidebar, organize your pages using tags and folders, comment on pages, and track changes.  You can create a free wiki or upgrade to a premium wiki for less than $10 per month.  An upgraded wiki allows you more control of the look and feel of your wiki.  Also, upgraded wikis have more security features than free wikis.

Follow this link if you would like to sign up for your own PBwiki.  If you would like to learn more about other options for wiki tools, you can return to the Wiki Tools page.

Using the Tool

PBwiki has a great Getting Started guide put together to help you get started on your wiki.  If you would like more help, you might want to take a look at this Teacher Training Video.  Also, since this Teaching with Technology wiki is a PBwiki, you can visit the Sandbox to try your hand at using a wiki.

Examples of Classroom Use

While the Teaching with Technology wiki is an example of educational use of a wiki, an online college course isn't the same as a secondary school classroom.  However, theses next two wikis are great examples of PBwiki projects in the classroom.

  • Great Book Stories is a project that you and your students can particpate in.  This wiki is a way to share your students' digital stories with a global audience.
  • iaspace is a project where students create myspace-type profiles of famous people or literary characters.  It's an engaging alternative to a traditional research paper and one that can be used in many subject areas.  Take a look at these wikis for inspiration for your own classroom.
